An Evolving Project

The more research I’ve done, people I’ve talked to, and photos I have collected… I think my topic is evolving into something new. I’ve begun to realize that, at least in Athens, talk of concepts and challenges often relates back to LGBT life in Athens, particularly the females and transmales that belong to that community. … Continue reading

Planning now, Photos coming.

This topic is proving to take more planning than expected.

I am currently talking to an array of individuals that I will soon begin following around, and then a flood of pictures will come in.

1. Rev. Julie Thompson from First Presbyterian Church in Athens, Ga.

I want to show a female leadership role within religion. Historically, the Christian religion was led by men. In many churches and sectors of Christianity, women still don’t have main leadership roles. Rev. Thompson has given me to okay to photograph in her church sermons, at Bible study class, during hospitals visits (if permissible by the establishment), at community events for the church, etc.

2. I am currently working on finding an exotic dancer. I have established a connection, but this is still in the air.

Feminine stereotypes, particularly pertaining to dancers and prostitutes, paints the woman as a submissive, sexual object. Depending on the nature of the individual I speak with, this could go two ways. Maybe she plays into this stereotype, or maybe there’s something about her life that goes beyond this stereotype.

3. I am currently scouting out a woman who rocks.

The rock n’ roll industry, though changing, has been dominated by male musicians. Topics common in rock anthems tend to stereotypically apply more to men in a “Rock God” complex kind of way. Rock muscians tend to be followed by female “groupies.” Less females make it in the rock industry. I will explore this on a smaller scale using an Athens local band to show that rock music can be empowering for feminine members of society.

4. A drag queen/king

A drag queen puts hyper-emphasis on feminine stereotypes because they are trying to portray the ultimate sense of feminism. Even though drag queens are biologically male, they are contributing to feminine stereotypes in a way. As for a drag king, these biological females are defying feminine stereotypes. They are embracing masculine traits and expressing this to other people. It’s an interesting dichotomy in the LGBT community, and there are plenty of people to speak with in Athens.
